Dear Friends,

I have been reflecting on the past 25 Years and the journey God has us on. When I first began this ministry I was a bit nervous stepping out in faith that God would provide for our needs. Even though He assured me that was not a problem for Him, I was still nervous. Obviously He has provided through your generosity and belief in what we are doing. God also provided me with a mentor in Francis MacNutt who is the most humble man I’ve ever met. I see him as a friend and a spiritual giant. In addition, I’ve sat under the teaching of John & Paula Sanford, Bill Johnson, John & Carol Arnott, Dr. Charles Kraft, and Paul Cox.

I’ve seen God do some amazing healings. Deaf ears opened, crippled legs restored, and blind eyes seeing. Through Inner Healing people have been freed up from experiences that have tormented them for years. I saw a raging storm stilled in Romania. I’ve experienced God’s protection from Satan who has tried to kill me. I’ve trained and ministered to hundreds of people around the globe who are now carrying on what they have learned through the work of Wholeness Ministries.

Little did I know when I began this journey all the places God would take me. I’ve gone from the slums of India to the Underground churches in Qatar. I’ve freely moved among Protestants and Catholics across the board. With all this behind me, it’s exciting to see what God has in store for us in the coming year 2020! He attended the Garden School of Kingdom Ministry for two years under Timothy Berry, and currently travels with Timothy to minister across the United States and in the nations. Samuel has a strong anointing for physical healing and a compassionate heart that strives to teach and demonstrate the powerful tenderness of the Father’s heart. He has seen hundreds of healings and constantly brings the Kingdom into his everyday life. Currently, Samuel is on staff at The Garden Church as the Director of Operations and is excited to continue growing in his gifts and as a friend of God.

Dear Friends,

It took a significant experience in my life for me to grasp that all that the world has to offer cannot fill the vacuum that God places in each one of us. A vacuum that only He can fill. I had an experience as a young man that clearly demonstrated to me that God will meet you wherever you are in life and fill you with an abundance of His love. And He will bring you into a place of restoration where life once again has meaning and purpose.

By the time I reached 26 years of age, I had accumulated an abundance of friends, stuff, and experiences. I had spent 4 years in the Air Force and had already traveled to many foreign countries. However, it was during this time that I emotionally hit bottom. I was in my last year at the university, working part-time and living on a sailboat in Sausalito, CA. I clearly remember sitting there one sunny afternoon saying, “God, I don’t get it. Is this all there is to life? What’s the point to even go on? If you are real do something, anything! If not I am ready to sail off into the sunset.” I felt that if this was all that life was about it was pretty pointless. I had reached the point that though I knew God existed I didn’t feel He was that intimately involved in my life and wasn’t sure He even cared.

Soon after this conversation with God, I came home to Bakersfield for a weekend visit. While there I met up with a good friend, Bob Hartley, who was the leader of our college group at the church I attended when I first returned from the Air Force. We were sitting in a room down at the church when I began telling him how low I was feeling. Bob listened to me patiently and then wisely said, “Mike, why don’t we just pray.”

We bowed our heads and I simply said, “God if you are real I need to know!” I immediately felt this warm rushing wind envelope my entire body and I heard God say, “Michael, when you accepted me as your savior at age 12 you received the gift of eternal life but you didn’t allow me to be Lord of your life. So you have missed the real joy of life and the power of my spirit living within you. That’s why you are so empty.”

I looked up and said to Bob, “Did you feel that?” He smiled and said, “Yes.” Now I’m not the smartest person around and sometimes I’m a little slow on the uptake but I said, “Lord, I place myself in your hands and give you all of me that I know how to give, my needs, my desires, my goals, and my mind, emotions, and will. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit, let me experience your power and use me anyway you choose.”

After that experience life began to have some meaning and purpose for me. There have been up times and down times, struggles and temptations, failures and victories. But life has meaning, I have a purpose and a goal. There’s a deep joy that no amount of booze, sex, or drugs could ever bring. The Bible says that the pursuit of these things of the world is death. I experienced the first stage of death which is emptiness and that’s where you’re headed without the power of Jesus Christ in your life.

It is 2019 and I’m now 77 years of age and this is part of my story. I am excited and filled with deep love and joy beyond any I have ever known. I am thankful that my Father God not only stood by watching over me but when I reached those times of discouragement He was there to pick me up, brush me off, and lovingly put His arms around me. At no time did I feel God had given up on me or abandoned me to the consequences of my actions. Whenever I called out to Him he was there. What amazing grace and love my Father has for me. This is what you can experience when you move into an intimate relationship with God.

Being one that is called to the healing ministry it is especially challenging to stay up and positive when sickness strikes me. For the last couple of months, I have been dealing with overall weakness and lack of endurance. The doctors are doing tests to see if they can determine what is going on, I’m receiving lots of prayer from friends and taking the steps I know to stay active and functioning under these circumstances. I’m sharing this with you to ask for your prayers but also to share the lessons I am learning while in this place. I have lived a life blessed with good health and energy so being in this place where there is limited energy is a new challenge. I know this is temporary because of the prophetic words I’ve received over the last twenty-five years that God has much more in store for me and I have faith and trust that He will indeed accomplish through me what He has promised. I am trying to stay alert to what He wants me to learn as I go through this time.

I remember many years ago as a young man in excellent health I had little patience with people in chronic pain. I was in ministry at the time and when these people would come for prayer week after week for the same thing, complaining and depressed I would pray for them but on the inside I would sometimes be thinking, “You need to just get over it and get on with your life.” Obviously, I did not understand chronic pain and that you don’t just “get over it!”

But then one day in 1985 all that changed. I was an avid snow skier and loved speed and taking jumps as I headed down the mountain. I was skiing down a ski run at one of our ski areas here in California. Near the bottom of the run, I went over a small jump but when I landed my skis stuck in the snow, I somersaulted out of them and landed on my back in the snow. I was momentarily knocked unconscious. When I came around I reached out to grab my ski pole and realized I had no feeling in my hands. That freaked me out but shortly the pain hit like hot needles down my arms and in my hands. It turns out I had broken some bones in my hand, done some damage to my neck, and severely pulled and tore some other muscles. After a trip to the hospital and numerous tests the doctor came in and said, “You are fortunate to be walking, you came very close to breaking your neck and being completely paralyzed!”

While I was immensely relieved to be walking, from that moment on I have had to deal with chronic pain down my arms and in my hands. The only thing that keeps me functioning is medication that makes the pain tolerable. I am well aware that God did not cause this accident but I was trying to figure out what good could possibly come out of this. One day the lights came on and I realized, “This is what it’s like to deal with chronic pain, you don’t just get over it!”

My attitude towards those dealing with chronic pain changed dramatically. As traumatic as this skiing accident was to me personally, I can see how God has used what happened to help me understand better those dealing with chronic pain that I did not have before this accident.

There are so many good things going on that it’s hard to know where to begin. I am part of a men’s group called Influencers that meets on Tuesday night at 6:00pm on the Bakersfield Christian High School campus. It’s a citywide group that allows me to build some lasting relationships with other men. The best part is, I don’t have to do any teaching or leading. I can just enjoy being there. This is my second year with Influencers. If you are interested in being a part give me a call or just show up.

For the last eight weeks I’ve been teaching each Wednesday night at Christ Cathedral from my book Learning To Do What Jesus Did. Pastor Max wanted his people equipped to pray for those in need of healing. It’s been exciting to watch them respond positively to this training and to see God help them discover their spiritual gifts and how to use them. I have my last session this coming Wednesday the 25th and these trained teams will then be available to pray with you each Wednesday beginning at 7:00pm at Christ’s Cathedral here in Bakersfield.

Beginning this Thursday, September 26th I will be teaching a class here at Summit Bible College. We are using the Learning To Do What Jesus Did book and equipping them to go out to pray for the sick in their churches, homes and out in the marketplace. If you are interested in this training in Spanish I will be conducting a two-day training event October 11-12 at the Fairfax Assembly of God Church here in Bakersfield. We will be using the Spanish version of Learning To Do What Jesus Did. I will of course be working with a translator as my Spanish is very limited. Dear Friends,

In this journey of healing that I have been on since 1984 God has shown me over and over that when I pray, the answer to that prayer is often contingent upon my expectations. There are as many reasons why God does not answer prayer, as there are reasons that he does answer prayer. Sometimes it has to do with faith, authority, or timing. But it has also become clear that what I expect when I pray is an important component.

When I was a child my parents attended a small Southern Baptist Church in Tulare, CA. We prayed for people often but I noticed that we never saw anyone healed and what I picked up was that we would have been surprised if someone was actually healed. They had not seen healing and did not expect healing but prayed out of a sense of duty.

Fortunately, that all changed when I was exposed to the teaching of John Wimber at the Vineyard in 1984. His approach was simple and to the point. When I watched him pray it was obvious that he expected things to happen. In fact, he seemed surprised when healing didn’t happen.

When I first began to pray for the sick I was nervous and thought I wanted badly for healing to happen it often did not. But God kept taking me back to his commandment in the Gospels to, “Go heal the sick!” He didn’t say, “Go pray for the sick, but go heal the sick.” So it seemed to me that when I prayed for people I should expect change and sometimes keep praying until healing happens.

I noticed in this journey that as my expectations increased, so did the answers to my prayers. Some years ago I heard Bill Johnson say, “The more you expect, the more you see, and the more you see, the more you expect.” So my question is, “What are your expectations of God?” Not only when you may be praying for healing for someone but in all your prayers. Prayers for finances, family members, jobs, difficulties you may be facing at work or at home. Come to the point in this amazing journey we are on where you Expect God to Answer Your Prayers.
