When I entered full-time ministry as a profession in 1976 little did I know that I would begin a life of adventure that just keeps me astounded at what I see and excited about what is yet to come. I still remember clearly the first healing conference Dr. John Lavender and I attended. It was held at the Vineyard in Anaheim, CA in a large warehouse with about 2,000 people in attendance.

Because of my exposure to healing as a ten-year-old boy, (not a good experience), I was not excited about this conference but Dr. John insisted I get in the car, and off we went. I was attracted to John Wimber’s teaching because it was presented low-key and easy to do. I was reminded of Jesus’ teaching which was so simple. He said to his disciples, “I have given you power and authority to preach the Good News of the Kingdom and heal the sick.” (John 9:1,2) He gave them two simple tasks. Proclaim it and demonstrate it. That command has not changed. We are simply to proclaim the good news and then demonstrate it by healing the sick.

I attend a weekly Bible study with a group of men, many with years in this walk of faith. I asked them how many of them had actually seen someone healed. Out of this group of 18 men, only four raised their hands. I wasn’t surprised but was grieved at this clear lack on their part of carrying out the second part of the Good News, healing the sick. To me, it is an indictment of much of the church for failing to train and equip people for this crucial part we have in bringing the fullness of God’s Kingdom.

My exposure to church as a young person included a strong emphasis on “getting ’em saved and discipled,” so they would go out and do what we had just taught them. We were good at that. But there was no importance placed on the second half of His command, “Heal the sick.” As a result up until I was 42 years old my experience of church was good, but it was obviously very limited.

When that changed in 1984 my journey became a life of adventure and astonishment at what I have personally seen and experienced! The blind healed, the deaf hear, the crippled walk, people are freed from demonic oppression, even a raging thunderstorm instantly stilled. These are not things I read about but experienced in my travels around this world. And this life of adventure is what I believe we were meant to live.

Yes, there are spiritual gifts given to all and I strongly believe we each have a particular gift we’ve been given that suits our personality. But we still have all been commanded to proclaim and demonstrate the Good News. There is risk involved but doesn’t everything that’s exciting or challenging involve some risk?

Whatever your experience be encouraged that there is plenty of opportunity for you to go “do the stuff”, as John Wimber would often say. It starts with you taking the risk, walking in the understanding that God is the healer. Grasping this is incredibly liberating as you realize that you are not responsible for what happens.

This book recounts over 150 miracles I have experienced in this journey.

Dear Friends,

In my travels and interactions with people wherever I go the conversation often seems to turn to the sorry shape our world is in and how bleak the future looks. When I listen to these conversations I find myself returning to the peace and assurance I have in God and the promise that He gives throughout scripture that He is still in charge and if our hope remains in Him, our future is something we must always look forward to with excitement and anticipation. God is still working daily in our midst, is still our protector, and our provider, and our healer.

Years ago I was reminded that we are always to bring in the good news of the kingdom of God, and human brokenness in all its forms can be healed. The disabled jump to their feet, the deaf hear, the blind see, the dead show up for dinner. The strong message is that we are to bring in the Kingdom of God by doing exactly what Jesus did when He was here on earth.

Recently I published a book titled, “Riding Shotgun With God.” It is a book of miracles I have seen on this journey God has had me on for over 26 years. I strongly believe He prompted me to write this book telling these stories to be an encouragement to us today that He is still in the business of working powerfully in our lives. I want to share some of these with you to encourage you.

No Longer Blind
After the message I gave an invitation to receive Jesus and hands went up all over the place. I would guess sixty-seventy people but I couldn’t keep up. One young girl with Multiple Sclerosis was going blind and could not see well enough to read. Later she told me she experienced healing when I was praying over the whole group. She said her eyesight cleared up and she was reading things written clear across the room on the wall.

Two Blind Ladies Healed!
On one of my trips, my friend Bill Chaney and I ministered at three different churches in India. The majority of people we prayed for were instantly healed. There was such excitement and expectation. Bill Chaney prayed for one lady who was blind in both eyes and was completely healed! I prayed for a lady who was blind in one eye and she was healed! We prayed for deaf people who were healed, people with breathing problems that cleared up immediately, people with leg and hip problems; we commanded demons to go and they left immediately; it was incredible! At one point I remember thinking, “This must have been what the disciples felt like.” What a glorious gift God gave us by allowing us to be a part of what He was doing.

When Rick Dickard and I were in Toronto a young boy of three was brought for prayer. One of his ears had a severe internal deformity, infection, and continual bleeding. This had been going on for months. After prayer, his parents took him to the doctor. The bleeding had stopped, the infection was gone and his ear was, as the doctor said, “like new inside!”

I could go on and on about God working among us today. So be encouraged that no matter what is going on in the world today, God is still in charge and has incredible surprises for us. He is still in the business of “Your will be done, your kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven.”

For much of my life, I thought I understood how much God loved me. My relationship with God was comfortable and safe. I called on Him when I needed something, He didn’t put too many demands on me and I did those things I felt were required to stay on His good side. My relationship with God had become as comfortable as the place that many of our relationships end up when we take each other for granted and fall into our comfortable and familiar patterns of behavior. Somewhere along the way the passion and fire of our “first love” is reduced to a pile of barely smoldering embers. We are lulled into such a place of comfort that we don’t even realize what has happened. As I continue in my walk with the Lord I’ve come to understand why it is so significant not to get too comfortable.

For instance, it was life-changing for me to discover what it means to live by grace and not performance. I knew and understood that He loved me because I was doing things for Him. But I did not understand that He also loved me when I was not doing anything for Him. When I was hiding my sin, running from Him, and playing the impostor. I had it all together on the outside but was a mess on the inside. To simply come to the place of living in His grace, (defined as a state of being protected by God), helped me to see that there was much more about Him that I did not know. I heard Jack Taylor say, “If you claim to know what you don’t know, you will never know what you do know.”

If you had asked me, do you know God? I would have answered, “Of course, I know God. I’ve been a believer since I was twelve years old!” As I later discovered I was claiming something I really didn’t know and it was keeping me from fully knowing how little of God I did know. If I had stayed in that place of comfort claiming that I did know God, I would never have come to the place of wanting to know Him more. When I understood how infinite His love for me is I began to grasp the verses in Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” That’s incredible!

You might ask, how did this happen, that you came to a place that you wanted to know God better? It came when I made a conscious decision to spend more time in His presence. Brennan Manning wrote in his book, The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus, “The longer you spend in the presence of Jesus the more accustomed you grow to His face, the less adulation you will need because you will have discovered for yourself that He is enough. And in the Presence, you will delight in the discovery of what it means to live by grace and not by performance.”

What incredible freedom this brought to me. Not only did my life not need to revolve around the acceptance and approval of others, but also if my Father God was pleased with me, everything else was of little consequence. At first reading this statement may sound a bit arrogant but think about this. If I am living a life that is pleasing to Him, I will be living out His love for others and treating them with the same love and grace that is being extended to me by God.

If you were to ask me today, do you know God? I would say, “Yes and no.” Yes, I know Him as much as I can at this point in my life, but no I do not know Him as well as I will a year from now. My quest is now to know what I don’t know which will help me to better understand what I do know. My question for you is, do you know how much God loves you, how valued you are? Do you understand that He wants to have a passionate, fully alive relationship with you, much like that fire that burns in you when you first fall totally in love with someone? Or are you comfortable where you are?

Dear Friends,

“Every day I live means one less day remaining in my lifespan on earth. But because I belong to Jesus, at the end of each day, I’m mindful of being one step closer to heaven.”

I read this quote in “Jesus Listens” by Sarah Young. I started thinking about my journey here and that at 80 years of age how much time is left before I step into heaven.

I also thought about what I have done thus far and how best to utilize what remains of my days here. We often hear of friends retiring and/or at least slowing down their hectic schedules. My personal feeling is that when one is called by God into a life dedicated to full-time ministry, somehow retiring doesn’t seem to be in the picture. I can see myself slowing down a bit but not retiring completely.

I think back to a couple of my mentors that God placed in my life when I moved from the world of business into full-time ministry. The first of these, Dr. John Allen Lavender was both a dear friend and a spiritual Father. I observed that when he retired from full-time ministry at our local church he nevertheless continued to be available to God in whatever ways God wanted to use him. In fact, in some ways, he was just as active in pursuing ministry through a series he developed to facilitate evangelism in the local church and in our everyday lives.

My second mentor, Dr. Francis MacNutt was also a dear friend and spiritual father. He continued to work tirelessly in the organization Christian Healing Ministries that he and his wife Judith established in Jacksonville, Florida. He left this earth in January of 2020 and stepped into heaven. Even though he was 95 years old and was slowing down it did not diminish his enthusiasm and fervor to spread the healing message of God whenever and wherever he could.

All of us that are believers in Jesus are called to proclaim and demonstrate the Good News of God’s transforming, healing power. Whether you are in full-time ministry or not you are to be an example to those around you of this transforming power of God working daily through you. Admittedly it is not always easy to do and in fact, can be quite challenging. The only way I know to do this is to daily spend time with Him who continually reminds us that whatever comes our way, both the good and the bad, He will use it to mold us into the man or woman of God that He destined us to be.
